NORTHERN Districts youth selection policy has paid dividends with the Butchers' young talent leading them to a big first-innings win against University at Hollymount Park yesterday.

Seventeen year-old paceman Jamal Banfield grabbed a hat-trick, destroying the Students' top order on his way to figures of 5-39, as University fell for 201.

On day one of the two-day fixture, 23-year-old Matthew Salakas showed great composure to score 117 of his side's 9-334 on the normally tricky Hollymount pitch.

Uni made a steady start in reply but Banfield knocked over Uni's top three with a expert display of left-arm swing bowling. It was his first hat-trick and the first time he had grabbed a five-wicket haul in any grade.

First to fall was opener Wayne Livermore (12), before Luke McNamara (0) was caught by Lee Clouten. Banfield's hat-trick ball was a beauty, an inswinging yorker which struck Luke McGregor (0) on the foot, caught the toe of the bat on the follow through and ballooned to mid-on. Lee Turner ran behind the bowler from mid-off to take a great diving catch.

"I appealed for lbw," Banfield said. "I reckon it should have been out regardless. Everyone was appealing for leg before but it was a good catch."

At King George Oval, Keira scrapped their way to a tense two-wicket win against Port Kembla.

After Port had scored 196 in their first dig Keira fell to 8-171 before limping home.

Balgownie got their premiership defence back on track with a dominant win over Wollongong at North Dalton Park.

The Magpies compiled 299 on day one before off-spinner Jamie Flemming destroyed Wollongong's tail, taking 5-35. Only 17-year-old debutant Kurt Majoor managed to defy Bally's attack, playing a lone hand with an impressive 51 not out.

Wests continued their great year with a win against Corrimal at Figtree Oval. After bowling Corrimal out for 122 (Shannon Crewdson 5-22), the Red Devils had already wrapped up the points at the end of day one.

Captain Nathan Dodd scored 112 not out and David Georgio 93 in Wests' 2-269 declared.

They were unable to make serious inroads into Corrimal's line-up in the second innings and stumps were drawn with the Cougars 2-98.
